Mexico is planning to vaccinate birds to control the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza AH5N1, in collaboration with the National Poultry Farmers Union and the National Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality Service. The vaccination will be targeted at birds in high-risk areas and will aim to protect parent hens. The ministry has assured that the outbreak does not pose a risk to public health and that poultry products are safe to consume after cooking above 70 degrees Celsius. The outbreaks in Europe and the United States have not led to any health issues related to poultry consumption. The World Organization for Animal Health has reported 443 outbreaks in 17 countries in the last two months, and 2,679 outbreaks of HPAI AH5N1 in poultry globally from January to September 2022.
