South Africa's 2022 wine harvest is projected to yield a smaller crop of 1 378 737 tons, a 5.5% decrease from 2021, but still larger than the five-year average. Despite the smaller crop, the quality of the wines is expected to be high due to cooler weather conditions during the harvest. The industry has seen growth in 2021 with a 22% increase in total wine export volume and a 12% increase in export value. The UK remains the largest export market, and there is global interest in South African Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and red blends. However, the industry faces challenges such as increased input costs, low wine prices, consumer spending, and domestically, sales bans and global trade barriers.
