China has successfully farmed Atlantic salmons on a large scale in warm waters, marking a strategic shift towards marine food security. The fish were bred 30 metres below the surface of the Yellow Sea, using a submersible deep-sea fish farm called 'Deep Blue Number-1'. The project overcame design and engineering challenges and has the potential to provide a Chinese solution for large-scale cold-water fish farming in warm waters. The farmed salmon meets EU export standards and will be transported to urban centres using cold chain routes and airfreight, ensuring freshness for consumers. This provides a new choice of high-quality protein for Chinese consumers and contributes to the country's marine food security.
