Import market for Fresh Avocado in Hong Kong (6월, 2022)

The United States' Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has approved the importation of commercial fresh avocados from continental Ecuador, effective May 26, 2022. This decision is part of a strategy to minimize the risk of bringing in plant pests and noxious weeds, and is supported by a pest risk assessment. Ecuador aims to expand its avocado cultivation from 6,000 to 10,000 hectares, with potential production increases. In 2021, Ecuador exported over 600 tonnes of avocados, primarily to Spain, Colombia, and Hong Kong, generating around US$2.2 million in revenue. This announcement comes at a time when Colombia is also increasing its avocado production, with a focus on sustainability. The avocado industry generally believes that increased consumption can accommodate the influx of additional supplies from these countries.
