The Department of Climate Action in Catalonia is experimenting with kiwi cultivation on three farms in Benissanet, Ribera de Ebro, as part of the Crop Diversification Plan to combat the Sharka virus, which has affected stone fruit trees. The project, which will run for five years, involves planting different kiwi varieties and testing shading strategies. The data obtained will be shared with other farmers. The region, with its favorable weather and soil conditions, is seen as suitable for kiwi cultivation. The department has also provided aid to farmers to plant alternative crops to peach and nectarine, which have been affected by the Sharka virus.
