In North Chungcheong, 166,000 livestock died due to the heat wave... 300 million won invested in disaster relief fund.
(Cheongju=Yonhap News) Reporter Jeon Chang-hae = Over 160,000 livestock have died in North Chungcheong province due to the ongoing extreme heat.
According to North Chungcheong province on the 2nd, as of the 30th of last month, 166,493 livestock had died in 93 livestock farms in the province due to the heat.
This is 425% larger than the same period last year (39,159 livestock).
Among the livestock, chickens accounted for the majority with 158,410, followed by ducks with 4,662, quails with 2,200, and pigs with 1,221.
In response to the ongoing livestock deaths, North Chungcheong province has urgently allocated 300 million won in disaster management funds and plans to provide immunity boosters and heat stress relievers to livestock farms.
Support of 400,000 won per household will be provided to 750 livestock farms in the province, with priority given to farms raising chickens, ducks, and pigs that are vulnerable to heat.
Boeun, Okcheon, Jincheon, Eumseong, and Danyang counties plan to provide additional support using 380 million won in special local tax grants for heat countermeasures, in addition to the provincial support.
Jeom Ju-gwang, Director of the Livestock Fisheries Division of the province, said, "As livestock deaths due to heat are a disaster directly affecting the livelihoods of farmers, we will devise various support measures."
