British researchers have, for the first time, conducted an experiment that not only allowed the transfer of red poultry mites (Dermanyssus gallinae), one of the most dangerous parasites of chickens, into a laboratory but also maintained a stable colony there without the involvement of live birds, whose contact with this pest poses a threat to them. This is reported in a scientific paper published in the journal Veterinary Parasitology. Previously, it was necessary to breed the mites directly on infected chickens or collect them in farm buildings. The first approach was unethical and subsequently negatively affected the welfare of other individuals from commercial farms, leading to differences in the origin and quality of the mites.
