The UK and EU have faced a challenge with the quality of basmati rice, a popular specialty rice known for its unique fragrance, as new varieties permitted since 2017 have failed to meet expectations. In 2023, new rules are set to be implemented to remove sub-standard varieties from the market. The issue arose due to fraudulent practices and the introduction of new basmati varieties that lack the desired fragrance. Originated in the fertile regions between the Indus and Ganges rivers, basmati rice has a long history and strict quality standards. The UK Rice Association introduced a code of practice in 2005 to ensure basmati's purity, but updates in the 2000s and 2010s to include more modern cultivars have led to concerns. Research at Bangor University has shown that some of these new varieties do not meet the fragrance standards, leading to the need for updated regulations. Efforts are being made to develop basmati rice varieties that are more sustainable and resistant to environmental challenges, highlighting the importance of maintaining high standards in the face of advancements in breeding and gene editing technologies.
