A study conducted as part of the European Food Safety Authority’s Fellowship Program has assessed the risk of Anisakis parasites in fish in Portugal and the public's knowledge of the parasite. The research found that while there are few reports of anisakiosis in Portugal, due to increased inspection measures and improved diagnostic techniques, there is a lack of awareness among the public about the parasite and how it is transmitted. The study also found that while most people are aware of the risk of parasites from raw fish, many are unaware of prevention methods. Additionally, the study found that a significant portion of the population would be willing to pay extra for fish products treated to remove Anisakis larvae and allergens. Other research projects discussed in the article look into the prevalence of Salmonella in swine carcasses, antimicrobial resistance in Campylobacter from Italy, and the health risks associated with the consumption of botanical preparations of kratom.
