The Brazilian Congress's Commission on Agriculture and Agrarian Reform is planning to make Brazil wheat self-sufficient within the next 10 years by increasing production in central and northeastern Brazil. Currently, Brazil relies on imports, mainly from Argentina and Uruguay, to meet half of its wheat consumption needs. There are over 200 million hectares of cerrados, previously degraded pastures, in central and northeastern Brazil that can be used for crop production without deforestation. Embrapa, a state-owned corporation, has developed wheat varieties for irrigated agriculture in central Brazil, leading to higher yields and quality.
