Peanuts are unsalable in Myanmar's Rakhine State! Prices plummeted and no one bought them, causing farmers to suffer serious losses
At present, due to the obstruction of road traffic caused by fighting, the military has blocked traffic in various regions, and it is impossible to transport peanuts to inland cities such as Magway, Mandalay and Saubu. Since it is impossible to transport, there are no merchants to buy, the price of peanuts has fallen, and farmers are facing losses. A peanut farmer from Kyauktaw Town said: "No one buys peanuts this year. Without buyers, they cannot be sold, and the price is also falling. The losses are very serious. This is the worst year." In the past few years, the price of peanuts per basket can reach more than 13,000 Myanmar Kyats, but this year the price of peanuts per basket has dropped to between 9,000 and 10,000 Myanmar Kyats. Merchants engaged in oil pressing only purchase peanuts in small quantities for oil pressing, resulting in very limited buyers of peanuts. Although farmers have planted peanuts in the face of high expenses, such as rising prices of fertilizers, pesticides, peanut yield enhancers, and shortages of peanut seeds, they do not want to face losses at present. Therefore, many farmers said that they may not plant peanuts next year. From Kyauktaw A peanut farmer in the town said: "Under this situation, I may not plant peanuts next year. The cost of peanuts is too high, and it is really not easy to take the risk of planting at this time. Since the war broke out, the situation has become worse and worse. There are no buyers and it is impossible to transport to the interior, and we are all losing money in the end." Since there are no buyers to transport peanuts to the interior, some farmers choose to process peanuts into edible oil through oil presses and try to sell them on the market. In Rakhine State, areas such as Bangnajun, Myohang Township and Minbya Township, including Kyauktaw, usually grow peanuts as a cold season crop. Peanuts are also grown in Kyaukphyu Township, Lanli Township and Manang Township. This year, due to the impact of the war, only some villages in these areas are still able to carry out limited planting. Before the war, peanut farmers in Rakhine State relied on high-quality peanut seeds from the interior for purchase and planting. However, after the war, the supply of peanut seeds from the interior was interrupted, and some farmers saved the peanuts they planted as seeds and took them out for use during the planting season.
