International walnut prices remain high, and Chinese walnuts are popular overseas!
According to German media Mundus Agri, due to the sharp decline in Chilean walnut exports, the attractiveness of Chinese walnuts has increased significantly. Yunnan walnuts have been basically sold out, while Xinjiang walnuts are favored by European buyers and are in short supply. Chile is currently the world's third largest walnut producer and second largest exporter, but the latest final report for the 2024/25 season released by the Chilean Walnut Producers and Exporters Association (ChileNut) shows that despite the improved production prospects this year, Chilean walnut exports have experienced a significant decline, and international buyers are turning their attention to China. Data shows that in the just-concluded 2024/25 production season, Chilean walnuts: - Walnut kernel shipments fell 14% year-on-year - Shelled walnut exports fell 29% - In February 2025 (the last month of the production season), exports plummeted year-on-year: walnut kernel exports were only 327 tons, a sharp drop of 60%; shelled walnut exports were only 135 tons, a sharp drop of 71% In walnut kernel exports, except for a slight drop of 2% to the European market, exports to other regions fell by double digits, with exports to the Middle East and Africa falling by 48% and exports to Asia and Oceania falling by 58%. Exports of shelled walnuts to China even fell by 50%, and exports to Asia and Oceania fell by 29% compared with the 2023/24 season. Prices remain high: Although the outlook for Chilean walnut production may be more optimistic this year, market sentiment is not optimistic. Based on the report provided by ChileNut, the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) predicted in its recent "Global Walnut Statistical Review" that Chilean walnut production will rebound to 168,200 tons this season, a 25% increase from last year's extremely poor 134,576 tons. However, coupled with the fact that US production also fell 27% year-on-year to 542,700 tons, and US suppliers' inventory levels are low, international walnut prices will remain high in the coming months. China's walnut quality recognition is increasing: China is benefiting from the current high prices of walnut kernels in the United States and Chile, as international buyers are turning to the Chinese market, especially European buyers. China's production in the 2024/25 season remains stable at a historical high of 1.55 million tons, and buyers' recognition of quality continues to improve: - Xinjiang walnuts are favored by European buyers because their fruit shape is close to that of American varieties, and there is even a shortage of supply this season - Walnuts from Yunnan are basically sold out - Xinjiang walnut prices are relatively stable in March As the harvest season draws to a close, buyers need to pay special attention to verifying product specifications. Since the kernel yield and color of walnuts at this stage are different from those at the beginning of the harvest, quality control needs to be strengthened to avoid trade disputes.
