REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Andi Amran Sulaiman said that the Government has prepared three areas for dairy farms, in order to increase national milk production and support domestic needs through Vietnamese investment. The Minister of Agriculture said that the Government has prepared land in three locations, namely in Central Sulawesi, South Kalimantan, and South Sulawesi, as a place to build dairy farms for investment from Vietnam. SummaryIt is often claimed that the fermentable organic matter (FOM) content of tropical forages is low and that this is the reason for low milk production and low milk fat content in some Southeast Asian countries. In practice, the FOM content of forages, including fresh grasses, is largely unknown because it is not routinely measured in Southeast Asian countries. The study described in the thesis investigated the FOM content of tropical grasses common in Southeast Asia to determine whether milk fat content can be increased. The study used an in vitro automated gas production test and the well-established nylon bag technique to assess the breakdown of grasses in the rumen of dairy cows, as well as a digestibility test in sheep. The study provides recommendations for optimizing the harvest times of tropical grasses and dairy cow diets to improve milk production and fat content.
