The Tanzanian government is intensifying measures to attract both domestic and foreign direct investment (FDI) into the sugar industry to address the severe supply shortage.

The Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) has granted a tariff exemption in the form of exemption from import customs duty on the import of raw cane sugar intended for industrial processing, reports Agrosektor.kz. According to the EEC, the customs and tariff regulation measure will be in effect until 2026 and provides for the import of the following quantities of the product: • no more than 20 thousand tons — to Armenia; • no more than 100 thousand tons — to Kazakhstan; • no more than 20 thousand tons — to Kyrgyzstan. "The decision was made to ensure the stable supply of sugar and sugar-containing products to the domestic markets of Armenia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan at competitive prices, to prevent a shortage of these goods, and to maintain the workforce of sugar processing plants," explained EEC Trade Minister Andrei Slepnev. He also emphasized that white sugar obtained from the industrial processing of imported raw cane sugar under the tariff exemption is not subject to export to other Eurasian Economic Union countries.
