Argentina's beef exports in the first nine months hit a 57-year high, with over 690,000 tons
According to a report by the Argentine website "infobae.com" on the 7th, from January to September, Argentine beef was exported to 48 markets around the world. Among them, the total amount of beef exported to the United States (+46%) increased the most, followed by Chile (+21%), Israel (+11%), the European Union (+7%) and China (+4%). Mexico ranked sixth, followed by Brazil, Russia, Canada and Malaysia. The amount of beef exported to these 10 markets accounted for 99% of Argentina's total beef exports.
In terms of beef type, 16% of Argentina's exported beef products are refrigerated beef, and the rest are bone-in and boneless frozen beef.
It is worth mentioning that last year, there were 31 export markets for Argentine refrigerated beef, and only one has been added so far this year; while the export markets for frozen beef have increased from 31 to 44.
In the first nine months, Argentina slaughtered 10.22 million beef cattle. Excluding the atypical last year, the slaughter of beef cattle was higher than the average level of 9.9 million from 2017 to 2022; among them, the production of bone-in beef was 2.336 million tons, which was also higher than the average level of 2.252 million tons from 2017 to 2022.
70% of the beef products produced in Argentina are consumed in the domestic market, and the rest are supplied to the export market.
However, against the background of record-breaking export volumes, the consumption of beef in the domestic market in Argentina is declining. According to data released by the Argentine Meat and By-products Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Ciccra), from January to September, the annual per capita beef consumption was 46.8 kilograms, a decrease of 12.3% from the same period last year.
