The latest horticulture biosecurity incursion making headlines this week was actually detected last month. An Ausveg Biosecurity update on Wednesday, December 18 confirmed tomato potato psyllid (TPP; Bactericera cockerelli) was first detected in Victoria in November on tomato plants. Tomato growers have been encouraged to monitor their crops following the detection of tomato potato psyllid in a glasshouse at a tomato production facility on the Bellarine Peninsula. TPP is a small insect that feeds on hosts such as tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, chillies and capsicums. The detection marks the first detection outside of Western Australia, where it was initially detected in 2017. A glasshouse tomato producer reported an insect infestation to Agriculture Victoria and surveillance has since found the insect at further locations within 1.5 kilometres of the glasshouse. Australia will throw $5 million at tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) in an attempt to eliminate it. The ToBRFV National Management Group (NMG), which includes all Australian governments and affected industries under the Emergency Plant Pest Response Deed (EPPRD), has approved the ToBRFV Eradication Response Plan. The plan encompasses surveillance, testing and containment measures to eradicate the virus and support the production and trade of tomatoes. The South Australia Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) is coordinating the response which is being nationally cost-shared by governments and industries.
