CNN Brazil reported that egg prices saw the largest decline, dropping 11.8% in May from 1.15 reais in April to 1.02 reais in May.
Brazilians' favorite lunch side dishes also saw price decreases in May. Rice prices dropped from 5.82 reais to 5.49 reais, a decline of 5.7%, while bean prices fell 2.7%, with average prices decreasing from 6.86 reais to 6.68 reais. The survey showed other price-declining items included flour (-3.8%).
On the other hand, coffee, also beloved by Brazilians, was one of the items with price increases. The survey showed coffee powder and coffee beans were among the items with the highest price increases in May, rising 3.7%. Coffee prices rose from 71.50 reais in April to 74.18 reais in May, with the increase linked to crop failures due to harsh weather in 2024.
"The dual factors of growing global demand and real depreciation are driving export prioritization. Therefore, domestic market price pressure should continue in the coming months," explained Anna Carolina Fercher, strategic data director at Neogrid.
Besides coffee, Brazilians also saw increased spending in May on vegetables (+1.9%), margarine (+1.4%), and pork (+0.6%). By region, the Southeast was the area with the highest price increases for these items last month.
In the first five months of the year, coffee continued to be among the items with the highest price increases. In December 2024, the item was priced at 53.90 reais, rising to 74.18 reais last month, an increase of 37.6%. Following closely were eggs (+11.8%), margarine (+2.2%), powdered milk (+1.9%), and vegetables (+1.6%).
