Laos licenses 273 hectares of durian orchards to actively expand into the Chinese market
According to Vientiane Times, the Attapeu provincial government has granted concessions to three Lao companies, allowing them to grow durian on 300 hectares of land, showing the Lao government's support for commercial durian cultivation. The concession agreement was signed at the Planning and Investment Department of Attapeu Province on April 7. The three companies will each obtain a 30-year concession of about 100 hectares of land. Most of the land will be used to grow durian while protecting forest land. It is reported that the three companies have obtained a total of more than 273 hectares of land for durian cultivation. After signing the agreement, the companies need to Submit an application for an investment license and must fulfill other obligations under relevant laws, including paying taxes and other fees. Driven by Chinese investment and China's growing demand for durian, durian plantations in Laos are expanding rapidly. Some Chinese companies have expressed interest in growing durian in Laos and shipping large quantities to China to meet China's surging demand. Since 2021, investors from China, Vietnam and Malaysia have come to Laos to invest in durian planting. These planting areas are distributed in northern, central and southern Laos. According to public reports, Sichuan Sunshine Jiarun Modern Agriculture Development Co., Ltd. has obtained a 5,000-hectare land franchise agreement in Attapeu Province in southern Laos for the planting of 40,000 mu of durian and 30,000 mu of other high-economic-value tropical fruits, and is expected to become the largest single durian planting base in Laos. The Laotian Ministry of Agriculture has stated that it is preparing market access documents for China and expects to export durian to China in 2025. From a long-term perspective, Laos borders China and is connected by the China-Laos Railway, with lower logistics costs and lower planting costs than Thailand, and Chinese investors will adopt a new management model Improve the planting level in Laos. In October last year, a group of companies from China met with members of the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Industry to discuss this matter. China requires Laos to establish the Lao Durian Business Association, the Lao Durian Industry Association and the Lao Durian Research Center to oversee all relevant processes from variety selection to planting technology, quality control, pricing and logistics. The Lao side supports these proposals and believes that this is an important measure for Laos to export durian to China.
