Santa Cruz dreams of its own wine hub: It will plant 12,000 grapevines brought from Mendoza, of six different grape varieties
Santa Cruz is moving forward firmly to create its own wine-growing hub. Its governor, Claudio Vidal, announced that in September the first 6,000 grapevines will arrive in the province from Mendoza, corresponding to six different grape varieties. The project, which will reach a total of 12,000 vines, aims to achieve local wine production. The chosen location to establish the first vineyard and begin this experience is Lago Posadas, in the southeast of Santa Cruz. According to local media Ahora Calafate, in February 2024, Vidal had already anticipated that this initiative was on the agenda, which would involve an investment of over 3 million dollars. Recently, 12 hectares were enabled to host the first 6,000 vines, of the Syrah, Malbec, Gewurztraminer, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc varieties.
