In the 2024/25 production season, Western Australian avocado production reached 36,889 tons, accounting for 28% of the national total of 131,385 tons. The national production volume once reached 150,913 tons in the 23/24 production season, and this year is expected to break that historical record. It is estimated that within the next two years, Australia's avocado production will reach 171,163 tons. Four years ago, due to overproduction, Western Australian growers had to dump a large amount of fruit. With the surge in production, concerns about supply surplus and market saturation have resurfaced in the industry. Since Western Australia has obtained pest-free certification, it is authorized to export avocados to Japan and Thailand, while exports to China are still under negotiation. The Australian Avocados Limited (AAL) signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with the Yunnan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs at the end of last year, and held the first China-Australia Avocado Industry Cooperation Seminar in Yunnan in April, aiming for long-term technical exchange and cooperation in the future. Brad Rodgers, the director of the Western Australian Avocado Association, said that the association has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Shanghai market worth approximately AUD 250 million for avocados, fully demonstrating the market's strong interest in Australian avocados. Industry insiders predict that once Australian avocados gain entry through Chinese customs, Western Australian growers will be ready to ship immediately.
