In the first quarter of this year, agricultural, livestock, and fishery production in the Jeju region showed a slight decrease compared to the previous quarter. The Jeju branch of the Bank of Korea announced the results of its first-quarter economic trend monitoring conducted among Jeju-based companies and related organizations. According to the Jeju branch of the Bank of Korea, the shipment value of agricultural products in the Jeju region in the first quarter of this year decreased by 6.5% compared to the same period last year due to a slowdown in the consumption of Jeju citrus fruits and a price drop caused by overproduction of winter vegetables. Regarding the tariff-free import of U.S. mandarin oranges, which was a concern earlier this year, the impact was found to be minimal. The import volume of U.S. mandarin oranges from January to February this year was 1,423 tons, an increase of 18.1% compared to the same period last year. However, some of the imported volumes were sent back because they contained pesticide components that exceeded the standard, and consumer preference for Jeju citrus fruits remains high, indicating that the demand shift to U.S. mandarin oranges has not been significant.
