Norway's salmon exports have a good start in 2025, with both volume and price rising in the US and Chinese markets
According to statistics, in the second week of 2025 (January 6-12), Norway's chilled salmon exports were 16,000 tons, basically the same as the same period last year, but the Oslo FOB price rose sharply by 8% year-on-year to NOK 118/kg ($10.34/kg), reflecting the continued strong demand and tight supply in key export markets.
During this period, Norway's exports to China, the United States and the United Kingdom increased sharply by 111%, 42% and 20% to 1,125 tons, 446 tons and 1,203 tons. Exports to the EU market fell by 6% year-on-year to 11,168 tons, South Korea fell by 10% to 345 tons, and Japan fell by 18% to 195 tons.
Prices in the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States rose by 8%, 7% and 9% year-on-year to NOK 111.69/kg, NOK 109.40/kg and NOK 132.80/kg respectively, and prices in China and South Korea rose sharply year-on-year to NOK 148.20/kg and NOK 159.26/kg, and the price in Japan fell 13% year-on-year to NOK 121.48/kg.
At the same time, the export volume of Norwegian fresh fish fillets fell 2% year-on-year to 2,455 tons, and the average price was NOK 165.45/kg, up 5% year-on-year.
The United States is the fastest growing market for fresh fish fillets, with exports increasing 34% year-on-year to 823 tons, while the EU sales fell 16% to 994 tons, and the sales in Japan and South Korea remained the same as last year, at around 240 tons and 130 tons respectively. The price of Norwegian fillets in the EU and US markets rose to NOK 152.14/kg and NOK 170.96/kg, and in South Korea and Japan, the price rose to NOK 188.10/kg and NOK 160.23/kg. China imported a small amount of Norwegian fresh fish fillets.
On the other hand, frozen salmon exports in the second week fell 22% year-on-year to 332 tons, and the price rose 4% to NOK Exports of frozen fish fillets increased by 28% to 1,507 tons, and the average price fell by 4% to NOK 142.99/kg.
