Vietnam's Durian Exports to China Plummet Nearly 70%, Customs General Administration Heads to Vietnam for Inspection This Week
Dang Phu Nguyen, Secretary General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT), pointed out that in the first five months of 2025, Vietnam's total durian export value was only 9.46 trillion Vietnamese dong (approximately $387 million), a year-on-year decrease of 58.0%; among which, exports to the Chinese market plummeted by 67.5%, dropping to 6.80 trillion Vietnamese dong (approximately $278 million).
Data shows that Vietnam's market share in China has declined from 40.0% at the end of 2024 to the current 10.0%. In contrast, Thailand, as the primary durian exporter, has quickly restored its export capacity by controlling alkaline soft yellow and prohibited substances like cadmium through farm testing methods, reclaiming 84.0% of the Chinese durian market. If Vietnam does not make substantial progress in prohibited substance detection and traceability for durian exports, the total export value this year is expected to be only 24.45 trillion Vietnamese dong (approximately $1 billion), a 50.0% reduction from last year.
The significant export decline has caused durian prices during peak season to drop to a near-record low, with many orchards experiencing poor harvesting conditions. On June 28, export-grade Ri6 durian procurement prices in southeastern Vietnam were at most 42,000 Vietnamese dong/kg (Grade A) and 27,000 Vietnamese dong/kg (Grade B); export-grade Monthong durian was 75,000 Vietnamese dong/kg for Grade A and 55,000 Vietnamese dong/kg for Grade B. Compared to the end of May 2025, Monthong varieties dropped by approximately 8,000 Vietnamese dong per kg, while Ri6 varieties fell by 16,000 Vietnamese dong. VINAFRUIT Vice Secretary General Dang Phu Nguyen revealed that despite high prices in the Chinese market, Vietnam lacks sufficient export-standard sources.
In stark contrast to fresh durian exports, frozen durian exports are experiencing explosive growth. In the first half of 2025, Vietnam's frozen durian export volume reached 14,282 tons, triple the same period in 2024. Due to its stability and extended preservation period, frozen du
