The investigation, which will last several months and is not directed at any particular country, represents a direct threat to Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, countries that are the largest suppliers of this product in the Asian nation. As befits a nation that is a global leader in agribusiness, Brazil was the first to issue a statement on the matter. “The Brazilian government takes note of the communication from the Ministry of Commerce of China on the beginning of an investigation in order to apply safeguard measures to beef imports by that country,” says an official statement. “During the next few months, and following the legal course and the deadlines of the investigation, the Brazilian government, together with the Ministry of Commerce of China, will investigate the possible causes of the country’s beef imports.
